Muslim Marriage Ceremony: 5 Major Sins to Avoid

Save yourselves from those Muslim marriages which are much of pomp, show-off, and extravagance. By attending them it will harm you more than it will do good. Here's why.

This is not an exhaustive list.

MAJOR SIN #1

"Display" of bride on the stage. This is not Islamic. A woman's beauty and adornment is LIMITED to Mahram. Simple.

MAJOR SIN #2

Intermingling of sex. Muslim marriages which allows non-Mahram men/women meet each other, where a women are all decked up, men are in their best attires and perfume, leads to FITNA.

MAJOR SIN #3

Gives a chance for women and men to show-off, backbite, slander, ridicule, boast, bad-mouth their near ones, relatives, and several others. This is a strict NO NO in Islam. In addition, those who generally avoid gossip/backbite/ slander get unnecessarily pulled into them, in such a gathering. Being part of such group leads to sin.

MAJOR SIN #4

Given that we have mixed gathering AND that these days our so-called Muslimah have abandoned abaya/hijab, AND that during such occasions women glitter and are heavily dressed, it gives enough opportunity for men to OGLE at women. Zina of eyes is a major sin. Even a casual glance which Wow's a man and arouses interest isn't acceptable in Sharia.

MAJOR SIN #5

Taking/demanding dowry from bride's parents or guardian. Neither did the Quran talk about this nor our Prophet (pbuh) or his Sahabis practiced this. In fact the Sharia states the contrary. Quran 4:4 clearly states it's the Groom who must pay MAHR (dowry) to the Bride — "Give women their dowry with a good heart."

We've tried to cover some major ones happening in our society today. Some Muslim wedding also have music and the couple jive/dance in front of the cheering crowd. This isn't part of the list as this anyways is haram, within or outside the marriage function. Have also attempted to make these as succinct as possible, assuming that our readers would know various verses from the Quran and Sahih Hadith that speak against indulging in such acts.

Remember the institution (marriage) which is built on haram practices and devoid of Allah's blessing (or could lead to wrath of Allah) cannot be successful, unless Allah decides to have mercy on the families (including the bride and the groom) who encouraged/promoted these forbidden acts.

Recall the following Quranic verse where Allah says,
"If you avoid the major sins, which you were forbidden, We will remove from you your minor sins and admit you to Paradise." ~ Quran 4:31

And recall the Hadith where Our Prophet (pbuh) said,
The most blessed marriage is the one with the least expenses. ~ Mishkat al-Masabih
The most hated of the permissible things to Allah is divorce ~ Ibn Majah
